This years' Speleofest was held in it's new permanent site on the Lone Star Preserve in Kentucky.
Thank you, Louisville Grotto for an enjoyable weekend.
Glenn and I arrived at the Lonestar Preserve on Friday, unfortunately, just as it got dark. Slowly we drove through gravel lined roads in the hilly, heavily wooded preserve, peering through the darkness for an empty site. Just as things were looking bleak, we ran into John and Paul from Wisconsin. Stopping at their site we asked if they had any idea where there might be an empty site. We were happy to learn that they had an open, level area behind their tent. Glenn and I set up our tent and tarp, cracked open a couple cold ones then headed down to the pavilion to sign up for trips. At the pavilion we met the lively Chairman of the Louisville Grotto, Garry Coomer. He offered to walk us over to the Lone Star Saltpeter Cave, which we took him up on. The 50' wide/15' high entrance was a just a few minutes' walk from the pavilion. From what we could tell, most of the cave consists of wide, walking passages. A room in the back contains Civil War dates and names on the wall. It was a nice cave to walk through with regular clothes. Thorn Hill was the first trip we signed up for. It's a great cave with fantastic formations; some of which I'd never seen in person before. I hope the pics do the cave justice. Thorn Hill has a bit of everything. Water passages, dry passages, chimneying, crawling, canyon passages, cave life, rimstone dams, etc.
