Glenn, George, Paul and I left for WV the day after Thanksgiving.
After we checked in at the hotel we drove over to Scott Hollow. We stood, outside the cave entrance, in bitter cold temperatures as we waited for everyone to get ready. It had to have been about 20 degrees. My hands kept freezing up. It was heaven getting into the cave and warming up. After climbing up and down over breakdown in the main passage for about an hour we checked out Mystic River and the really long, huge flowstone. We got to the Mystic River via a new passage that Mike D. told us about. The passage was recently blasted and dug out. There was about 20' of crawling involved. We hung out there for a bit, taking pics, then we ventured into the Root Canal passage that I haven't been to before. Rows and rows of long soda straws lined a good portion of the passage. It's really a site to see. When we finally got out of the cave late at night, after about 6 hours of caving, the Akron grotto people had just shown up and were at the entrance! Is there such thing as a Cave angel? Well if there is, it was in the form of an Akronite when he offered us each a beer as we got out of the cave. We didn't need a cold stream to keep these beers cold. It was freezing outside. The next day we went over to Rehobeth Church Cave and spent a couple hours in there. We made it to a stalagtite/column formation room where we took a break, took pics, then made our way back out. It was a great way to spend a holiday weekend.
